How to apply for NSFAS (step-by-step)

NSFAS applications are done through the official myNSFAS portal.

What you need before you start

Prepare the following:

  • Your South African ID number (or permanent resident details)
  • An active cellphone number
  • An email address you can access
  • Internet access (or help from a trusted person)
  • Any documents NSFAS may request (varies per student)

Step-by-step: how to apply for NSFAS

Step 1: Go to the myNSFAS portal

Open the official site:
https://my.nsfas.org.za


Step 2: Create a myNSFAS account

If you don’t already have one:

  • Register using your ID number
  • Create login details
  • Verify your account

Step 3: Log in and start your application

When applications are open:

  • Log in
  • Select Apply
  • Start a new application

Step 4: Enter your personal details

Fill in all required information carefully:

  • Names and surname
  • Contact details
  • Address information

Step 5: Enter household information

NSFAS may assess household income and circumstances. Answer honestly and accurately.


Step 6: Upload documents (if requested)

NSFAS may ask you to upload documents depending on your situation.

Upload:

  • Clear documents
  • Not blurry
  • Not cut off

Missing or unclear documents can delay or reject your application.


Step 7: Submit your application

Before submitting:

  • Double-check all information
  • Confirm uploads (if any)
  • Submit and wait for confirmation

Step 8: Track your application

Log in to myNSFAS regularly to:

  • Check your status
  • See if documents are requested
  • View your final outcome

What happens after you apply?

Your application may show statuses such as:

  • Submitted
  • Under review
  • Provisionally funded
  • Unsuccessful

Each stage can take time. Be patient, but keep checking.


If your application is rejected

You may be allowed to submit an appeal (if the appeal window is open).
